Books

My fifth book appeared in April 2022. It tells the history of American public lands, gathering the work I have done for twenty-five years in other books and articles.

Writer of the Natural World

Most of my writing is inspired, one way or another, by the living world. Much of that inspiration comes from direct experience and then considered through a historical lens. This writing includes personal essays, historical features, and commentaries.

About Me

I’m Adam M. Sowards, a historian and writer. I specialize in public lands and conservation in the US West, especially the Pacific Northwest, but I follow my curiosity wherever it leads. I live in the Skagit Valley in Washington State where I write, study history, and engage with the living world.

Between 1998 and 2022, I taught thousands of college students before becoming professor emeritus. I continue to write, research history, and engage in the questions and themes that inspired my academic career in new forms. I usually describe those principal themes as focused on nature, public lands, and democracy, but in truth, those are mere tips of the proverbial iceberg.
